Jesus Christ

A look at what the Bible says about Jesus Christ.

Jesus from the Book of Philippians:  (top)

[Talking of Jesus Christ:] "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:6-11)

     Jesus' Work:  (top)

Jesus is fully God (known as God the Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity), and fully man. As a man, Jesus was sacrificed as a substitute for mankind: this means that He took the punishment for sinful mankind, thus diverting God's wrath away from us, to ensure that those who trust in Him would be reconciled to God.

     The life of Jesus:  (top)

Jesus is an historical figure - that is, he really did exist, and few people who know anything about the subject would argue with this. It has been said that there is more evidence that Jesus lived than there is that Julius Caesar lived.

Jesus came to earth by virgin birth to Mary, the wife of Joseph, in Bethlehem. He existed beforehand as God, and in fact, there has never been a time when Christ did not exist.

He lived a perfect life on this earth, following God's ways and seeking His glory. At around the age of thirty, He began his public ministry, calling disciples and performing miracles, including healing the sick, raising the dead to life, feeding thousands of people with a few loaves of bread and fish, calming storms and walking on water.

He died at around the age of thirty-three on a cross in Jerusalem after being betrayed and tortured. At the time he died, many miraculous things happened. For example, the Sun stopped shining, there were earthquakes, and holy people who had died rose from the dead. A Roman Centurion watching this who had not believed beforehand (and in fact would have in some way aided in the execution of Jesus) exclaimed: "Surely he was the Son of God!" (Matthew 27:54).

On the third day, He rose again, appearing to many people. He encouraged His disciples, then, after about forty days, He ascended into Heaven.

Now He sits at God's right Hand. He will come again to judge the world, and when He comes the world as we know it will end. Those who have trusted in Him will go to live with Him forever. Those who didn't will go to a place of eternal punishment. This place is called Hell.
