James was born in 1971 in Sydney, Australia; and has been a Christian for as long as he can remember. For most of his school life he went to Sutherland Shire Christian School, finishing up in 1988. He started at the University of Sydney the following year but had to stop when it became apparent that he was very sick with Leukaemia.

After Chemotherapy, a Bone Marrow Transplant, and six months of hospitilisation, he returned to University in 1991 and completed a BA majoring in Music, and then a Diploma of Education. He worked for two years as a teacher in a small country town and for a further two years at his old school in Sydney.
In 1999 James decided that he needed a change so he went back to University to study English Literature. He visited Thailand for the first time in 2000 and helped to run worship songwriting courses at several churches in Bangkok.
Between 1999 and 2002 he recorded and produced two albums of worship music (From The Heights Volumes I and II) with the musicians and songwriters at his church in Sydney. On his third mission trip to Thailand he met Air and they married in October 2003.
