This section seeks to help new Christians to grow in their relationship with God, and get started in their Christian lives.
(These points are in no particular order.)
1. A big part of living the Christian life is spending time with other people who know God. In this way you can grow as a Christian, and you can be an encouragement to others around you. That, along with our desire to praise and thank God, is why we go to Church. (You can read my "Find a Church" guide here.)
If there aren't any other Christians who know of your decision, make it your top priority to share this exciting news with a Christian you know soon. There are many things a believer there with you can help you with that a computer screen can't. Let me know as well, and join a Church (If you don't know anyone who attends a church, just turn up to one and pray that God will provide someone to introduce you around, and make you feel more comfortable).
Regular meetings with other Christians are imperative, and this will usually occur in the form of Church and Bible study each week. Once you are comfortable at church, you can also talk to the minister/pastor/priest about baptism, which is a great way of publicly declaring your faith. You must remember though, that doing these things does not make you a Christian. It is your faith and trust in Jesus expressed by living God's way and trusting that you are saved through Christ that makes you a Christian.
2. A second big part of living in a relationship with God is reading His word to us (the Bible) regularly - usually each day. There are various online Bibles, but I'd recommend you get a physical copy - it's easier to read. (You can read my "Get a Bible" guide here.)
I have also prepared a Bible reading plan, along with comments on each day's readings here. I have written these comments thinking of new Christians reading the Bible for the first time, seeking special guidance through its pages. But it may be better as a new Christian to concentrate on a few select books, such as The Gospel of John, The Letter to the Ephesians, The Letter to the Romans and the first letter from John (1 John), before attempting to read through the whole Bible.
3. The final big part of the Christian life is talking to God. There are examples of prayers in the Bible, and there are many different types of things God wants to hear about from you. A good general rule would be to talk to Him about anything that concerns you: friends and family, your own relationship with Him, work, school, University, College - you get the picture. But try to get an understanding from your reading of His word what is most important to Him. Ask Him how you can serve Him better, and what He wants from you. A good prayer to model yours on, is the one suggested by Jesus Himself:
"Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one."(Matthew 6:9-13, NIV.)
Check out Prayer Central for more insight and help with your prayers.
God loves you. He has shown this by sending His Son to die for you, and by calling you to find out about Him. If you ever doubt His presence, or are worried or afraid, pray to Him and trust in His love.
Other than the above, which are truly the big things to remember, I recommend you look around this site, especially the Bible and theology sections. For each subject in the theology section I have written a summary of the Biblical teaching, at the top of each page. To grasp these summaries would put you well on your way to a mature understanding of the Bible. And generally speaking, all pages on this site were written to help people learn, and from their knowledge, grow closer to God. I have also written this site assuming that those who visit will most likely need a complete introduction, in non-technical terms.
Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of the big three above. They won't get you saved, they won't save you any more than you're saved already, but they are imperative for growing closer to God.
