Abortion Counter

The above counter is a relatively conservative estimate of the number of abortions that have been carried out this millennium (since 01 January 2001) in the western world. This site also produces a counter detailing the number of abortions in the whole world. I offer the use of the script for free to anyone who would like to include it on their site. I have also written my thoughts concerning abortion at My Thoughts on Abortion, and invite you to read.

Disclaimer  (top)

The presence of's Abortion Counter on another site does not mean that I endorse their views expressed on their site. The counter is open for all to use.

Use the Code Yourself  (top)

The code is free to be used by anyone on their site, on the condition that they leave appropriate attributation to this site and this page... Simply follow the below steps to continue.

First, send a message to me from my Contact page indicating that you are using the Abortion Counter so that if any changes occur to the service in the future, I can give you adequate warning (I wont use your email for anything else).

Second, you must understand that only one counter will work per page (hence the above counter will stop ticking when an example counter is generated for you below).

Third, you must generate your code before copying and pasting it into your page...

   Generate Your Code  (top)

To generate your code, you must pick some options. First, would you like the counter to display the number of abortions in the developed world only, or the entire world? (click on your choice)

Second, in the explanation (when the mouse hovers over the counter), would you like the time span to be referred to as "this millennium", "the last x years" or "since 1 January 2001"? (click your choice)

   Alter the Appearance  (top)

You can of course change the appearance by simply changing the CSS values. Here are some examples: -

Documentation and Calculation  (top)

The counter is based upon 1999 statistics produced by The Alan Guttmacher Institute and recorded in the article "Facts In Brief: Induced Abortion Worldwide", and sourced from AGI, Sharing Responsibility: Women, Society and Abortion Worldwide, New York: AGI, 1999, p.25. The Alan Guttmacher Institute is one of the two standard providers of statistics in this area, and seem to be the higher, although more accurate source.1

They report that (at 1999) there were approximately 46 million induced abortions worldwide, every year. Of these, 22% occured in developed countries. To find the number of abortions in the developed world, I have taken the simple formula of 46,000,000*0.22/(365.25*24*60*60) to find that there is one abortion every 3.118503 seconds (in the developed world). So that the figure can't be accused of being an exagerration, I've rounded 3.118503 up to 3.2 and call it a "conservative" estimate. It may not sound like much, but it lowers the total by about 1,000,000 at the time of writing. (I have similarly produced a conservative estimate of worldwide abortions by rounding 1 abortion every 0.6860 seconds, up to one abortion every 0.7 seconds.)

Due to the use of averages, and statistics estimated in part, the number itself is obviously not perfectly accurate, but is pretty close. There is some evidence also that the rate of induced abortions has dropped slightly in the U.S. since 1999, however, the U.S. (according to the same report) accounts for less than 5% of worldwide abortions (and therefore less than 23% of abortions in developed nations), and so the difference would be minimal to an already approximated number. There could be more abortions, there could be less. But basically, the counter is sadly roughly accurate.

1   The other source is the Center for Disease Control, in the United States. I have also found information published in 1997, by the World Health Organisation, "Medical Methods for Termination of Pregnancy", which claimed that 53,000,000 abortions per year (world wide) was a likely estimate. This is 8,000,000 above the Alan Guttmacher Institute 1999 figures, but I have chosen to stick with the lower figure in order to remain conservative. (World Health Organisation, "Medical Methods for Termination of Pregnancy", Geneva, 1997, p.16.)   (jump back to text)
